USA • ITW Pillar Technologies, a surface treatment and induction cap sealing systems manufacturer, announced the launch of the industry’s first onboard maintenance indicator for its corona treatment systems.
AUSTRALIA • Amcor announced the appointment of Roelof Westerbeek as president of Amcor Flexibles Asia Pacific. Westerbeek will begin his new role on 15 March and will be based in Singapore.

CHINA • Amcor announced an agreement to acquire BPI China, a subsidiary of UK-based British Polythene Industries PLC for USD 13 million. BPI China has one plant in Xinhui, South China, with blown film and flexographic printing lines, that produces flexible packaging products.
USA • Pamarco announced the appointment of James Chesley as technical sales engineer for the Pacific Northwest. Pamarco hopes his 22 years of experience in flexo printing and package printing related industries, previously with Econo Products and Anderson & Vreeland, will help continue the company’s expansion in the region.

MEXICO • Less than one year after agreeing upon a seven-machine deal for its new greenfield site in Nava, Grupo Gondi has placed another large order for Bobst printing and conversion equipment as well as for upgrades to existing equipment.

UK • TCL Packaging Limited of Telford, a printer and converter of packaging films, in partnership with Creation Reprographics, credits Asahi Photoproducts AWP flexo plates in part with its progress towards its goal of migrating gravure production to flexography for flexible packaging.
Because of AWP flexo plates improved quality, the company said customers like TCL have been able to transfer production to flexographic printing.
DENMARK • Danish suppliers of surface treatment, Vetaphone, and Danish press manufacturer, Tresu, have combined to show the first example of a corona treater working on a sheet-fed press line.

The words “printed electronics” tend to mean different things to different people. UK • A new study has identified thirteen emerging flexible packaging markets: Poland, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Nigeria, and South Africa. Collectively these markets, valued at USD 14 billion, have grown by almost 70% since 2006 and now account for 20% of total world demand.

GERMANY • Flint Group launched its new Rotec Lightweight Sleeve for conventional plate mounting with adhesive tapes. The plate mounting sleeve offers weight savings of up to 40% compared to standard sleeves on the market, according to the company.

UK • Smithers Pira released a new report forecasting the global packaging industry to grow at an annual rate of 3.5% over the period 2015–20. It’s expected to reach USD 998 billion at today’s prices. Flexible plastic packaging is predicted to continue as the fastest growing packaging category.
THE NETHERLANDS • AV Flexologic announced the new semi-automatic mounting machine, Samm Postprint. The machine mounts flexographic printing plates onto plastic film using a patented image recognition software that measures the position of the mounting materials in real time.

BRAZIL • Smurfit Kappa, a paper-based packaging supplier, has acquired Brazilian companies Industria de Embalagens Santana (INPA) and Paema Embalagens for approximately USD 199 million in December 2015.
