Part 8: Mark Kay (Nova Chemicals)
Survey among package printers: Looking back into 2017 and trends in 2018
In late 2017 and early 2018, Flexo & Gravure Global asked several package print shops and converters about their opinion on the past year and their estimations on trends and challenges for 2018. In the eight part of this survey, Mark Kay, group leader performance films for Nova Chemicals talks about the new and sometimes difficult challenges facing packagers as the e-commerce channel rapidly evolves, the emphasis on circular economies, and the China sword politics.
As you look back on 2017, were you able to meet your own expectations and what surprised you the most about the printing and packaging industry and markets?
Yes, we met our expectations and in some areas, greatly exceeded them. I’m continued to be surprised by the new and sometimes difficult challenges facing packagers as the e-commerce channel rapidly evolves, driving new opportunities for packagers but at the same time management of change.
As we move forward into 2018, what do you see as the largest trends or megatrends in the industry?
Even more emphasis on circular economies, and closed loop recycling.
What do you feel the industry should be most prepared for dealing with over the next 12 months?
The impact of China sword policy, and the full impact of what it may mean (positively or negatively) for recyclers, MRFs and the like.
